The number of zero-emission trucks deployed across the United States has increased rapidly in the last six years, growing from only several hundred on the road in 2020 to over 35,000 in 2025. Fleets of all sizes are beginning to adopt these technologies, and the zero-emission vehicle landscape is evolving.

As the market develops, real-world data is a crucial resource to help navigate the transition. Data is increasingly valuable to understand how the industry is handling the fuel transition, assess how current efforts align with emerging best practices and identify areas for improvement:

  • Our new analysis of transportation sustainability commitments, Four actions for fleet leadership: Benchmarking the transition to zero-emission fleetsshowcases success stories, best practices and trends among top fleets making zero-emission transportation a priority.

  • The EDF Electric Deployments & Commitments Tracker monitors orders and deployments of electric trucks through deployments data, as well as how major companies are approaching sustainability in transportation through commitments data.

  • Additional resources include information and anecdotes on EV success stories, best practices goals and transition planning, and real-world analysis of transportation related sustainability commitments.

Four actions for fleet leadership: Benchmarking the transition to zero-emission fleets

EDF updated its 2021 transportation leadership framework in 2026 to reflect changes in the zero-emission vehicle landscape and define what credible sustainability leadership looks like for fleet operators. The report analyzes sustainability commitments made by the top 100 U.S. fleet-owning companies against four key actions: committing to zero-emission fleets, creating transparent transition plans, deploying solutions and engaging in policy and industry efforts. The report aims to identify best practices and areas for further development in sustainability commitments among the top fleet-owning companies in the U.S.
