Team Overview

: The Marketing Team is responsible for telling the story of EDF — crafting compelling narratives, stunning visuals and innovative campaigns. From designers to writers to data analysts, we bring together the creative and analytical to attract supporters toward EDF’s mission.

Overall Function

The Writer is responsible for creating and refining engaging content that tells compelling stories and conveys complex information in accessible ways. This position serves a dual role, creating high-quality written content for EDF’s flagship website, EDF.org, and our digital magazine, Vital Signs. These platforms require different narrative approaches — ranging from marketing to storytelling — so the person in this role will need to switch deftly between the two and demonstrate skill in both.

This position is as much about relationship-building as it is about writing: The person in this role must work collaboratively with multiple people across teams and respectfully negotiate the best way forward for any given piece of content, balancing feedback from reviewers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create, edit and publish engaging, clear, compelling content including web pages, blog posts and journalistic-style articles, from initial concept through final publication — meeting audience needs while supporting EDF’s strategic initiatives.
  • Steward the organization’s brand identity across all content types, ensuring consistency, clarity and connection with multiple audiences.
  • For our digital magazine, pitch, research, report and write concise, compelling news stories and features that align with EDF’s mission and resonate with EDF members and other environmentally concerned audiences.
  • Synthesize feedback from a variety of internal stakeholders and revise content to align with project objectives.
  • Develop ongoing working relationships with EDF experts and their communications teams to stay abreast of EDF work, surface compelling stories, foster mutual understanding and streamline collaborative processes over time.
  • Participate in advancing EDF’s organizational effectiveness and culture goals, so people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address environmental and organizational challenges in ways that align with EDF values.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the environmental and political landscape as it pertains to EDF's work.
  • Work with the Creative Team to help develop accompanying visuals (graphics, photos, videos, and other interactive formats).
  • Understand and apply SEO best practices in content development.
  • Use a content management system (CMS) to draft, edit and publish content, following editorial calendars and governance guidelines.
  • Contribute to a vibrant, inclusive team culture where all voices are valued and everyone feels they belong. Apply these values to the content we create.
  • Additional relevant responsibilities as assigned.

Travel Expectations

Ability and willingness to travel domestically once or twice a year preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with at least a minimum of six years of professional writing experience in marketing and journalism, including full-cycle content creation for webpages, blog posts, news stories and longform articles.
  • Demonstrated experience shaping and maintaining a strong, cohesive brand voice working on content that covers a wide variety of topics.
  • Demonstrated experience crafting compelling narratives backed by research and reporting.
  • Excellent attention to detail, well-organized and able to manage multiple projects at a time with varying priorities.
  • Proven ability to manage feedback from multiple sources, simplify complex technical language, and incorporate feedback constructively.
  • A proactive and independent self-starter, yet also a skilled relationship-builder, diplomat and negotiator who appreciates working collaboratively.
  • Meticulous about accuracy and grammar. Familiar with AP style.
  • Working knowledge of content management systems (e.g., WordPress, Drupal).
  • Demonstrated self-awareness, cultural competency, inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across all

    cultures and backgrounds.

  • Nonprofit experience and working knowledge of environmental issues are a plus.
  • Enthusiasm for creating a collaborative, inclusive, and positive work environment.
