Senior Communications Specialist, Europe
Overall function
The Senior Communications Specialist will support the delivery of EDF Europe’s energy transition communications, with a strong focus on methane reduction. This role helps shape and implement integrated communications strategies that build visibility and advocacy impact across Europe, aligning with EDF’s global messaging and mission.
In addition to campaign execution, the role supports EDF’s broader energy transition storytelling and public messaging goals - helping to position and promote narratives that elevate EDF Europe’s work within wider climate, energy, and economic priorities.
Working closely with EDF Europe’s Communications Lead, Mission and Marketing Communications teams, agency partners, and freelance contributors, the Specialist will contribute to content strategy, campaign planning and execution, media engagement, and digital communications. They will also help ensure thematic consistency across EDF Europe’s initiatives and support the development of compelling narratives that increase attention and influence. The role will report to the Communications Lead, EDF Europe.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the development and implementation of EDF Europe’s communications. strategies for methane and the energy transition, including transport and other priority sectors.
- Promote powerful messages about methane abatement, data transparency, policy solutions, and industry readiness, helping shape narratives that elevate EDF Europe’s work within broader climate, energy, and economic priorities.
- Manage external consultants and partners in collaboration with EDF Europe’s Communications Lead and Mission staff, ensuring clear briefs, proactive planning, and strong execution of communications initiatives, also within the Civil Society Observatory network.
- Draft and produce media materials including press releases, commentary, and blogs; support media outreach and relationship-building with key journalists and editors across international, national, and trade outlets.
- Evaluate news value and identify new storytelling angles; support speaking opportunities and event planning for EDF Europe spokespeople; and help cultivate voices that reach targeted audiences.
- Coordinate proactively with external partner organizations on joint communications and advocacy efforts, establishing regular touchpoints to ensure alignment and maximising impact.
- Develop and manage digital content across EDF Europe’s owned channels, including editorial calendars, social media posts, visual coordination, and performance reporting.
- Track and evaluate communications success using quantitative and qualitative data to monitor progress toward campaign goals and identify opportunities to refine and optimize strategies.
- Participate in advancing EDF organizational effectiveness and culture goals, so people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included and empowered to address environmental and organizational challenges in ways that align with EDF values.
- Collaborate across teams and disciplines, including marketing, policy, and mission staff, to ensure communications products are timely, aligned, and impactful.
Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, digital media, public relations, or related field with at least 4 years of relevant professional experience.
- Demonstrated experience creating and managing content across social and digital platforms (e.g. LinkedIn, X, Paid ads).
- Strong writing and editing skills, with a portfolio of content for web, social, or campaigns.
- Working knowledge of digital analytics, SEO, and performance tracking.
- Experience supporting or leading media outreach and engagement strategies.
- Strategic mindset and confidence contributing to campaign and message development.
- Comfortable working in a cross-functional, matrixed team with internal and external collaborators.
- Interest in methane and climate action, with an understanding of how targeted work contributes to broader environmental and energy transition goals; experience in EU or international NGO contexts preferred.
- Organized, proactive, and adaptable to shifting campaign priorities and timelines.
- Fluent in English; additional European languages (especially French, Spanish, German, or Italian) are a plus.
- Must have the right to live and work in the EU/UK when applying.
- Demonstrated self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and the ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across all cultures and backgrounds.
Compensation
- Belgium: EUR 60,000 - 66,000
- Netherlands: EUR 57,000 - 63,000
- UK: GBP 42,000 - 48,000
Eligibility
The role is a 2-year fixed-term contract based in Brussels, Belgium (hybrid), the Netherlands (remote) or the UK (remote). We support hybrid flexible working. You must have the right to live and work in the country you are applying to.
