Manager, Mission Finance

Overall Function
TheFinancial Manager, Mission Financeis a key member in ensuring the successful operation of the budgetary and operational control systems on behalf of one or more Mission teams. They will develop, track,and analyze budgets and fundraising proposals and reports, organize and present financial data for reporting, and review contracts and grants. Additionally, this position will oversee financial processes for assigned workstreams and coordinate with other Mission Finance staff.
This position will work closely with leads to help set a standard for best practice on reports and data integrity, work to fill capacity gaps across the team, and mentor and collaborate with other Mission Finance staff. Further, theywill serve as a representative, as appropriate, to other departments in the organization and works closely with many stakeholders within EDF.
The Financial Manager reports to the Interim Director, Mission Finance and will be a member of the Mission Finance team within the Finance team, partnering with other Mission Finance, Finance, Region, Mission, and Development teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce, analyze, and distribute monthly financial reports, comparing actual vs. budget results, and investigate variances, identify key trends, and advise Mission decision-makers on risks, issues, opportunities, trends, and actionable recommendations.
- Lead the development of annual budgets for one or more Focus Areas and implementation spending plans, where applicable, ensuring timely progression, compliance with EDF processes, alignment with strategic priorities, and proactive identification of risks and efficiencies.
- Perform ad-hoc financial analysis that will provide decision-making support on strategic initiatives.
- Organize data and create clear and accurate presentations, including spreadsheets, charts, graphs,and other insightful summary material in a way that is accessible to both financial and non-financial stakeholders and helps mission leadership and staff make resourcing decisions.
- Participate in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.
- Working with Development and Mission staff, create budgets, financial proposals,and reports for donors and new fundraising opportunities and monitor grant-level financial activity, identify variances in grant-level budget management, and advise on any necessary course corrections.
- Oversee grants and funds to ensure proper deployment of resources in alignment with donor intent, internal policies and workplans, and GAAP rules.
- Under the guidance of Mission Finance leadership, work with the Finance and Accounting staff to ensure coordination of financial management efforts and timely resolution of issues.
- Oversee financial aspects of contracting, purchasing, and invoice approvals for one or more Focus Areas, ensuring compliance with EDF guidelines, adherence to internal controls, and identification of potential international finance risks.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance financial efficiency, reporting accuracy, and risk mitigation.
- Review and approve new project budget proposals for fundraising opportunities outside of the annual budget process and financial reports for funders as needed.
- Participate in departmental meetings and trainings with both the Finance and the Mission teams.
- Assist in educating and training staff on budget and financialpoliciesand processes.
- May manage, support, mentor, and guide financial staff, as needed.
- May support other teams with financial and budget management, as needed.
- Additional relevant responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
- 6+ years of progressive experience in a financial analyst role or in a Finance and Accounting department and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, or Accountingor professional certification required. A Master’s degree may substitute for up to 2 years of experience.
- Experience working with governmentnonprofit grants experience is required, including governmental awards. Prior experience with Salesforce donor CRM a plus.
- Experience with forecasting, budgeting, and proficiency in reporting SAAS and ERP/Cloud-based financial systems required.Experience with NetSuite a plus.
- Proven knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, and reporting, with the ability to perform complex financial analysis.
- Familiarity with GAAP principles and thorough understanding of non-profit accounting principles and grants management.
- Demonstrated self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
- Strong presentation and verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate complex financial information successfully to a broad audience with differing needs and understandings.
- Proactive and detail-oriented with the ability to spot trends and ensure accuracy and understand numbers at a granular level.
- Ability to think strategically with the ability to comprehend how line-item detail rolls up to achieve key program goals and milestones.
- Strong ability to work independently and collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team across multiple time zones.
- Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to be flexible under pressure with changingpriorities and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced team environment.
- Strong proficiency in MS Office Suite, particularly Excel, including the ability to understand and develop formulas, charts, and spreadsheets that clearly present data to facilitate decision-making by senior leadership.
