Communications and Public Engagement Intern

Program/Department Overview

The Communications and Public Engagement Team at Moms Clean Air Force, an affiliate of EDF that mobilizes parents and caregivers to protect children’s health from air and climate pollution, plays a critical role in amplifying our message, supporting advocacy efforts, and engaging communities through digital storytelling, social media, and public events. The PR team works to ensure our environmental justice, climate, and public health initiatives are communicated effectively to diverse audiences across the U.S., with a special focus on high-profile events in Washington, D.C. and priority states.

Overall Function

The Communications and Public Engagement Intern will support the team in creating content for social media, newsletters, blogs, and event promotions, drafting communication materials, and supporting the logistics of organizing key public events. This role reports to the Senior Manager, Editorial and Member Cultivation and will provide an excellent opportunity to develop skills in digital media, public relations, and environmental communications.

Key Responsibilities

Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Support content creation for social media platforms, newsletters, and blog posts related to Moms Clean Air Force’s key initiatives (EcoMadres, Environmental Justice, etc.).
  • Assist in planning and promoting events, including those related to policy advocacy and community health.
  • Help draft communication materials, including press releases, fact sheets, and social media copy.
  • Support event logistics, including gathering materials and coordinating virtual or in-person meetings, conferences, and rallies.
  • Participate in advancing EDF’s organizational effectiveness and culture goals, so people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included and empowered to address environmental and organizational challenges in ways that align with EDF values.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in/recent graduate of an undergraduate or graduate degree program with demonstrated interest and/or coursework in environmental communications, environmental science, public relations, environmental justice, or climate change.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn), and content management tools.
  • Experience in social media management, content creation, or event coordination is a plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be well organized, motivated, and detail oriented.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a team setting and have the ability to work independently when projects are due.
  • Demonstrate self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across all cultures and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate initiative and problem-solving skills.

Location

U.S. Remote with option to be hybrid out of EDF’s Washington D.C. office. Intern supervisor is in Northern Virginia and many team members are in the Greater Washington Metro Area.

Hours

Part-time (15-20 hr/week) or Full-time (35 hr/week)

Compensation

This internship would involve compensation for work paid at a rate competitive with leading non-profits at $18-20/hr, based on academic level.
