Mattias Cape

Marine Biogeochemical Scientist

Work

Areas of expertise:

Oceanography, phytoplankton ecology, biogeochemistry, polar regions, marine carbon dioxide removal, blue carbon

Description

As a member of EDF’s Ocean Science Team, Mattias applies his broad oceanographic knowledge, interdisciplinary thinking, and quantitative skills to understand the ocean’s role in climate and identify promising ocean climate solutions that benefit people and nature. Specific areas of research include the protection of blue carbon ecosystems and quantification of their ecosystem services and the evaluation of novel marine carbon dioxide approaches to climate mitigation. He sits in Science & Innovation and also works closely with the Fisheries and Oceans.

Background

Mattias has worked in the field with diverse interdisciplinary teams from Antarctica to the Arctic to better understand how our oceans function and the impact humans have on the Earth System. Mattias was a postdoctoral scholar at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Applied Physics Lab’s Polar Science Center, and the University of Washington’s School of Oceanography where he studied interactions between physical processes and the structure of phytoplankton communities. Prior to joining EDF in 2023, Mattias served as Senior Data Scientist for Scoot Science, an ocean data startup, where he led the creation of novel ocean data synthesizes, analytical products, and operational forecasting tools to address pressing needs for the salmon aquaculture industry. He is also passionate about experiential education, and has taught extensively in field, classroom, remote, and laboratory settings for numerous university programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
