Global Climate Policy Expert from U.S. State Department Joins Environmental Defense Fund

Environmental Defense Fund announced the hiring of Meredith Ryder-Rude as its Associate Vice President for Global Engagement & Partnerships to direct the organization’s global advocacy. Prior to joining EDF, Ryder-Rude supported the U.S. State Department, leading climate adaptation and loss and damage negotiations and serving as the U.S. member on the UNFCCC Adaptation Committee and the Executive Committee of the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage.

It’s been ten years since the Paris Agreement set the world on its path toward an inevitable economic transition, and we can’t let up now--even against a backdrop of geopolitical complexity and competition. Climate action is key to achieving the lasting economic growth and prosperity that companies, communities and nations are striving for,” said Ryder-Rude. “I’m thrilled to be joining an economics-driven organization with a long history of fostering partnerships and innovation that advance solutions for both people and planet.” 

Ryder-Rude's expertise on international development and global climate policy  includes deep experience on adaptation and resilience in least developed countries, small island nations and Africa, including developing climate finance solutions that reach communities; strategic partnerships; and United Nations climate and biodiversity negotiations.  

She directed the State Department’s Regional Environment Hub for Central America and the Caribbean, supporting the implementation of high-level environmental policy on the ground in the region, with a specific focus on ocean and forest conservation. She also served as the U.S. Councilmember to multilateral climate funds, including the Least Developed Countries and Special Climate Change Funds.

Leveraging her 15 years of experience, Ryder-Rude will provide strategic vision and leadership to support EDF’s engagement in and contribution to international environmental policy processes, including United Nations and other multilateral frameworks. She’ll also advance EDF’s work on climate finance issues, as well as help foster partnerships with governments, UN agencies, global organizations, NGOs and local communities to advance progress towards climate-resilient, low-carbon development.
