Description
Julie Morgan Hooper is an accomplished leader in higher education and nonprofit philanthropy with a track record of success. In March 2025, she joined Environmental Defense Fund. A global nonprofit organization focused on addressing the most pressing environmental challenges facing the planet, EDF blends science, economics and law to create practical solutions. Hooper leads the Global Development team, playing a key role in expanding EDF's philanthropic efforts and accelerating the organization's impact.
Prior to her work at EDF, Hooper served over 10 years as the vice chancellor for University Development and Alumni Relations at the University of California, Berkeley. There, she spearheaded some of the campus's most significant philanthropic initiatives. Under her leadership, the university exceeded expectations in its $6 billion “Light the Way” campaign, raising a total of $7.37 billion and setting new fundraising records for the institution.
Hooper also served as president of the UC Berkeley Foundation, overseeing the management and administration of private funds for the campus. Her leadership extended across Berkeley’s various schools and departments, ensuring alignment with the university’s strategic goals and mission.
Before her tenure at Berkeley, Hooper gained valuable experience during her eight years at the University of Texas at Austin, where she held key leadership roles in the $3.12 billion “Campaign for Texas.” Outside of education, her experience spans various nonprofit sectors, including environmental, cultural and social services, earning her recognition as an Outstanding Fundraising Professional by AFP Austin and the CASE Frank L. Ashmore Distinguished Service Award.
In addition to her nonprofit work, Hooper’s career includes experience in the private sector in global trade, further expanding her understanding of organizational leadership. She has also dedicated her time to community service, further demonstrating her commitment to both philanthropy and sustainability.
Hooper served for six years on the board of the Sustainable Food Center, an organization focused on increasing access to healthy food while promoting environmental sustainability. Additionally, she contributed three years of service on the governing board of CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education), an association that supports the advancement of educational institutions globally. Her volunteer work reflects her deep belief in giving back to her community and enhancing the broader impact of nonprofit organizations.
Background
Hooper has a Bachelor of Arts in History from Boston University and a Master's in Historic Preservation from the University of Georgia's College of Environment and Design.
