EDF Welcomes Appointment of New FDA Deputy Commissioner of Human Foods
Today, Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf announced the appointment of Jim Jones as FDA’s first Deputy Commissioner for Human Foods. Jones will oversee the agency’s work in multiple areas, including food and chemical safety, innovative food products, and nutrition to help reduce diet-related diseases and improve health equity.
Tom Neltner, EDF’s Senior Director for Safer Chemicals, hailed the appointment as a significant step forward in FDA’s planned reorganization:
“Commissioner Califf has made an impressive choice by selecting Jim Jones for this position. His federal regulatory leadership experience at EPA and his expertise on toxic chemicals will be assets in bringing needed change to FDA’s culture and modernizing its decision-making.”
