Congestion pricing is New York's Route Forward
Environmental Defense Fund is working with a broad coalition of business, environmental and community leaders to support implementation of the nation’s first congestion pricing plan to reduce traffic, improve transit and cut pollution in New York City.
Congestion pricing, officially called the NYC Central Business District Tolling Program, was approved in 2019 by New York State and affirmed in 2023 by the Federal Highway Administration after a robust Environmental Assessment process. The plan aims to:
- Fund public transit to make services more reliable, efficient and accessible for all
- Save time, aggravation and money for families, businesses and emergency responders
- Make New York a sustainable and resilient city by mitigating vehicle emissions, providing sustainable transportation alternatives and adapting to a more volatile climate
