Areas of expertise:

Environmental economics and policy, water resources and ecosystems, integrated socio-environmental systems, socioeconomic value of Earth science information

Description

As Director of EDF’s Economics Analysis Hub, Yusuke leads efforts to provide timely, practical economic analysis that informs strategy and action. He works with economists, analysts and colleagues across EDF to transform complex research questions and data into accessible economic insights. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches that integrate economic analysis into policy and advocacy questions and strategy development.

Background

Before joining EDF, Yusuke was a professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and a Fellow at Resources for the Future. His research has focused on the economics of water resources and ecosystem management, including federal and state regulation of water pollution, sustainable agricultural water use, and water management to protect aquatic species and their habitats.

His research draws on applied microeconomic theory, nonmarket valuation, cost-benefit analysis, dynamic optimization, applied econometrics, and policy analysis. He is particularly interested in integrated socio-environmental research that examines the relationships among human behavior, natural systems, and public policy.

Yusuke has also studied the socioeconomic benefits of Earth science information. He previously served as Director of the Consortium for the Valuation of Applications Benefits Linked with Earth Science (VALUABLES), a cooperative agreement between Resources for the Future and NASA. The consortium supported research, outreach, and communications focused on the societal value of information derived from Earth-observing satellites.
