Gwen Ruta

Senior Vice President, Climate and Energy

Areas of expertise: Corporate partnerships, business and the environment, renewable energy and energy efficiency, short-lived climate pollutants, EDF Climate Corps

Gwen Ruta is Senior Vice President of Climate and Energy at Environmental Defense Fund, leading initiatives to turn the corner on climate change. EDF's team of over 100 scientists, attorneys, economists and policy analysts is focusing on the largest opportunities to reverse the rise of emissions, and on designing markets and policies that align national priorities with carbon reduction, turning the engines of prosperity toward a stable climate.

There is huge potential for clean energy in the U.S., but to unleash it we must transform the century old electricity system. EDF is helping to rewrite outdated utility regulations and spur competition to turn the electric grid into a clean, intelligent network. At the same time, we are working to reduce climate and air pollution from existing power plants.

Meanwhile, we're also working to cut emissions of short-lived climate pollutants, which are causing a quarter of the warming that we will experience in our lifetime. Our focus in on methane from oil and gas operations, where through partnerships and policy advocacy we're reducing methane emissions across the natural gas supply chain.

And because tropical deforestation causes about 15% of the world's greenhouse gas pollution, EDF is building on a quarter century of experience in Brazil to make that country a catalyst for broader deforestation throughout the Amazon.

Previously, Ms. Ruta was Vice President of Corporate Partnerships at EDF. There, she spearheaded EDF's work with multinational companies to accelerate environmental innovation in business products, services and operations. Ranked #1 for effective environmental partnerships by the Financial Times, Ms. Ruta's team kicked off transformations in market sectors from shipping to retail to fleets. Notable initiatives included slashing supply chain greenhouse gas emissions with Walmart, creating a market for hybrid trucks with FedEx, and launching an innovative business internship program to catalyze energy efficiency in business.
