Sr. Director, Digital Influence Campaigns

Environmental Defense Fund is hiring a Senior Director, Digital (Program) Influence Campaigns to design, execute and manage best-in-class digital campaigns that help persuade key decisionmakers to take specific actions on climate change and other pressing environmental issues. Drawing from a sophisticated toolkit that includes deep social listening, influence mapping, digital content distribution and relentless A/B testing, these campaigns will create permission structures that encourage officeholders and other policymakers to act constructively on our issues. To drive these campaigns, the Senior Director will lead small, purpose-built teams drawn from EDF Programs, Political Affairs and MarComm.



Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President, Strategy & Communications, the Senior Director, Digital (Program) Influence Campaigns will work closely with program strategists to map the influence networks of key decisionmakers and flood those networks with digital content to create echo chambers that complement offline strategies and tactics deployed by the programs. The Senior Director will have primary responsibility for the planning and managing the online work.



The ideal candidate is a creative thinker, strategist, and doer with deep experience leading successful modern digital campaigns. Must be a proactive communicator and idea generator, full of collaborative energy and drive, who can build and manage multiple projects while delivering high-quality work on quick turnaround. They will have a big picture, campaign-focused strategic sense and an up-to-date understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the latest digital tools. They will have experience making research-based recommendations that marry audience insights with deep knowledge of digital platforms, and a record of success building grasstops and grassroots digital influencer campaigns and mobilizing digital audiences.






  • Plan, implement and project-manage digital influence campaigns - grasstops grassroots, and mass-influencer - designed to move key decisionmakers to specific environmental outcomes. Lead cross-functional EDF teams to design and implement these campaigns and analyze results. Build strong, collaborative internal relationships with both managers and senior leadership.

  • Build the capacity of program communications teams to conceive and execute this kind of work. Mentor and inspire directors and managers to use new tools to achieve program goals.

  • Lead digital partnerships with external allies, such as nonprofits, coalitions, and companies.

  • Work collaboratively with internal and external marketing and communications specialists and manage agencies as needed.

  • Work with EDF Performance Marketing to measure and analyze campaign metrics in real time, making on-the-fly adjustments to boost effectiveness. Make recommendations for more effective use of existing channels and/or identify new tools and channels; maximize results with limited resources.

  • Stay ahead of the curve on new developments and emerging tools in the space, and share that knowledge with colleagues in the organization.




  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant digital media experience with direct team management and successful track record of developing and leading digital advocacy campaigns, including grasstops or grassroots advocacy and/or electoral campaign work. Experienced in a fast-paced, international, and mission-driven environment a plus.

  • Superior project management and collaboration skills.

  • Knowledge of all online channels and using innovation to improve and/or implement new channels and tools to increase awareness and engagement . Experience with digital influence-mapping tools required.

  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, problem-solving, and mentoring skills, and a calm, diplomatic demeanor, even in times of intense pressure.

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, especially for digital platforms

  • Strong verbal communication, listening, presentation and persuasion skills.

  • Extremely sharp organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects, tasks, and files.

  • Proven ability to build productive working relationships with colleagues at multiple organizations, while helping to forge a unified campaign vision.



This role can Remote in the US OR based out of one of our major offices: Washington DC, New York, or San Francisco.
