Senior Data Analyst, Methane Science

The Office of Chief Scientist (OCS) is the nexus of science at EDF, ensuring that the science that is the backbone for all EDF policy positions is based on the best available information. To be most effective in this role, OCS provides programmatic support for all scientists at EDF and fosters relationships with scientists outside the organization.

Overall Function

The OCS Methane Science team is seeking a Senior Data Analyst to manage and fulfill MethaneSAT data requests for industry and finance sector engagements. This position will work closely with the Senior Director, Business and Energy Transition, to support EDF’s Global Methane work on National Oil Companies, Europe and Asia Pacific markets, orphan wells, finance sector engagement with the global oil and gas industry. Much of this work will be engaging with companies (IOCs, NOCs) and activating their investors (shareholders and creditors) on lowering industry methane emissions by 75% by 2030. The Senior Data Analyst will provide dedicated analytical support and translate MethaneSAT data into actional insights for corporate, financial and global trade advocacy efforts with oil and gas industry operators, finance sector (shareholders, creditors, banks, insurance), and customers.

This position will report to the Senior Scientist II, Methane Science within OCS and will be embedded in EDF Business Energy Transition team.

This is a 2-year fixed term position with opportunity for extension.

Key Responsibilities

  • Acquire, compile, and organize geospatial data from MethaneSAT and other satellite sources, ensuring data accuracy and quality. 
  • Manage large datasets efficiently and ensure data integrity. 
  • Conduct spatial analyses to identify patterns, trends, and relationships within geographic data. 
  • Utilize GIS and other tools and techniques to perform geospatial modeling and generate meaningful spatial representations of O&G field-level emissions, or groups of assets belonging to specific operators.  
  • Develop high-quality maps and visualizations for a range of projects and purposes.  
  • Present spatial data findings in clear and understandable formats, both in reports and through interactive maps. 
  • Work closely with EDF Business team to understand MethaneSAT data use needs and provide support for projects and engagements. 
  • Communicate findings and insights effectively to non-technical stakeholders through a variety of formats. 
  • Conduct quality assurance checks on data and outputs to ensure accuracy and reliability. 
  • Support and manage key components of ongoing projects with internal and external partners, including from academia, industry, and research organizations.
  • Perform literature reviews and analyze and synthesize scientific/technical information on a variety of topics to support MethaneSAT project and related EDF activities.
  • Help develop reports, fact sheets, blog posts, and other materials for general and specific audiences on the topics of focus.
  • Work with a team of scientists and technologists to write up project results for staff, partners, donors, and peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Support other "rapid response" and/or project development efforts on an as-needed basis.
  • Represent EDF in external meetings with a high degree of professionalism.
  • Participate in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with at least 4 or more years of relevant experience or a Master's degree in Data Science, Geoinformation Science and Analytics, Geospatial Technologies, Geography, Earth Systems Science, Remote Sensing or in a related discipline with at least 2 years related experience.
  • Strong quantitative background in geospatial data analytics and tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, geostatistics, Google Earth Engine, GeoPandas).
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as R or Python.
  • Background or interest in methane emissions, including from oil and gas and non-oil and gas sources, is desired.
  • Experience working with large geospatial and satellite datasets is highly desired.
  • Intellectual agility and comfort with working on a wide variety of environmental topics.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including demonstrated ability to translate technical information for non-technical audiences.
  • Comfortable with translating quantitative geospatial analytical information for non-specialist audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and support a multi-disciplinary team, using independent judgment to plan, prioritize, and organize a diverse workload in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
