Senior Communications Specialist

Overall Function


The Senior Communications Specialist will be responsible for supporting strategic communications campaigns, earned media outreach initiatives, content creation and marketing campaigns that persuasively connect with our target audiences both domestically and in the countries where we operate. S/he will assist with project management, graphic design and persuasive writing in support of advancing the work of EDF Oceans. 

 

The Senior Communications Specialist will report to the Communications Director for EDF Oceans and coordinate closely on a day-to-day basis with Oceans Program staff.  

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute communications strategies and outreach materials including blogs, social media, press releases, reports, PowerPoints, major thought leadership events, videos, infographics and other content
  • Assist with project management of team outputs and workflows
  • Coordinate and track project outputs and metrics on communications efforts for EDF Oceans and generate reports on a monthly and quarterly basis
  • Manage content on EDF Oceans Twitter handle and other social media platforms
  • Support management of the story budget and editorial calendar for the EDF Oceans blog and assist with marketing it to key audiences
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with targeted online, print and broadcast journalists, editorial writers and columnists, as well as with other opinion leaders and engage in regular media pitching to key media outlets
  • Generate, track and market earned media exposure in key media outlets
  • Research and pitch EDF experts for thought leadership events and promote speeches, conferences, white papers and other outputs developed by key Oceans team members in a variety of countries
  • Develop and implement systems and processes to track Oceans Program work and identify strategic opportunities for communications support.
  • Support project management of a variety of communications materials and outputs in a face-paced environment, often executing on tight deadlines;
  • Support maintenance of electronic files, including media lists in Cision, press clips, brochures, fact sheets, etc.
  • Serve as a liaison to Oceans team members, assisting with their communications needs

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications or marketing with a minimum of four years’ experience; or advanced degree with at least two years’ experience
  • Proficiency with social media tools and outlets
  • Experience with graphic design and web design
  • Practical, real-world experience in environmental media and communications
  • Experience working on global campaigns and initiatives preferred
  • Superior creative and opportunistic media outreach abilities
  • Excellent writing, proofing and editing skills
  • Experience managing contractors (i.e. Web and graphic designers, communications consultants, etc.)
  • Excellent telephone, oral communication and presentation skills
  • High degree of fluency with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience using a variety of marketing and media tools including Cision, Google Analytics, and media monitoring software
  • Meticulous attention to detail and outstanding organizational skills, including ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines
