Program Coordinator, Media and Public Engagement

Overall Function


Under the direction of the Senior Manager for Media Engagement, the Moms Clean Air Force Program Coordinator, Media and Public Engagement, is responsible for supporting media outreach, social media engagement, and virtual events for Moms Clean Air Force staff and field organizers. The Program Coordinator will provide essential administrative and substantive input to enhance Moms Clean Air Force’s robust public engagement work, including but not limited to engagement with print, radio, podcast, online, and broadcast media outlets; digital outreach for field organizers via social media; and development, execution, and promotion of virtual events.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to tracking and amplifying our media accomplishments both within our organization and with outside partners; drafting Tweets, talking points, op-eds, letters to the editor (LTEs), and speeches; and helping field organizers maximize their reach via social media, media interviews, public speaking, and virtual events.


This role is integral to a small but mighty media team that works closely with other departments to expand the reach and influence of our earned media and other engagements, helping drive meaningful awareness of and action on climate. A passion for crafting messages, sharing compelling stories, and addressing environmental injustice will ensure success in this role.


Key Responsibilities:


Communications and Traditional Media


  • Draft talking points, press releases, op-eds, LTEs, blog posts, public remarks, and other assets for field organizers and national staff to use in their ongoing media and public engagement outreach.

  • Track media “hits,” adding articles to our media database and our website.

  • Support drafting and copy-editing of bi-weekly digest of media coverage.

  • Manage administrative tasks to support communications outreach, including but not limited to maintaining an internal editorial calendar and updating reporter contact information for media lists found in Cision, a media relations platform.

  • Send press releases to reporters and media outlets in Cision.

  • Share media hits and virtual events both within EDF and with partner organizations, and create related social media guidance.

  • Interview field consultants and volunteers to gather personal stories for use in media outreach and Moms’ publications, including blog posts, volunteer spotlight, media, etc.

  • Help organize database of photos and videos; work with contracted photographers and videographers to ensure all images are uploaded and tagged; coordinate sharing of images internally and externally upon request.

Social media


  • Draft and schedule Tweets on state Twitter pages to maintain active engagement on issues relevant to our work.

  • Customize posts for the respective states, including strategic tagging of elected officials, state and federal agencies, and media outlets. 

  • Increase Twitter followers and engagement in the states where Moms Clean Air Force has organizers working - including but not limited to MT, NV, AZ, CO, NM, TX, IA, MI, OH, PA, WV, GA, FL, and the District of Columbia.

  • Draft social media guidance to amplify articles, petitions, campaigns, and other activities.

  • Create social media images to highlight our accomplishments.

  • Tenaciously follow the latest digital trends, innovations, and opportunities, and work with field organizers to implement new strategies.

  • Analyze social media performance metrics, monitor progress toward goals, and fine-tune strategies for improvement

  • Provide guidance and training for the field consultants on social media platforms, particularly Twitter and Facebook Live, and regularly strategize for improvement.

  • Create social media guidance to accompany press statements, blog posts, elected official interviews, lawmaker thank you’s, and more.

  • Conduct live-tweeting of relevant hearings, press conferences, and other events.

  • Monitor reporter engagement on Twitter in order to help reach more reporters with our core messages.

Virtual Events


  • Manage virtual events from conception to completion, including calendaring, developing run-of-shows and scripts with external partners;creating and managing multiple overlapping project timelines; drafting event invitations; and creating shareable images for event invitations.

  • Work with partners to ensure effective cross-promotion and cross-broadcasting to multiple platforms.

  • Manage outside production consultants when necessary, regularly evaluating reach and effectiveness of virtual events.

  • Train field team on best practices for planning, broadcasting, moderating, and promoting virtual events with legislators, experts, and community partners.


Other (As Needed)


  • Participate in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values

  • Provide periodic reports through weekly conference calls, monthly written reports and other communications as needed

  • Perform other duties as assigned.




  • Bachelor Degree a plus, or three years of relevant experience in public relations, digital outreach, media engagement, and/or marketing/communications.

  • Superior communications skills, including superb writing and editing skills.

  • A fierce attention to detail, process and timeliness especially with media deadlines is a must.

  • Proficiency in social media platforms with demonstrated social media and digital engagement experience. Understanding of social media best practices and processes.

  • Strong understanding of climate change, electoral politics, environmental justice, and/or grassroots advocacy.

  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. Has independent judgment to make decisions on work activities, including identifying and recommending action steps and prioritizing diverse, simultaneous tasks.

  • Exceptional personal organization, attention to detail and ability to multitask.

  • Excellent time management and organization skills

  • Ability to work occasional non-standard hours, across time zones with a geographically dispersed team.

  • Experience and proficiency with using InDesign or Photoshop; Wordpress; Cision; and/or Twitter scheduling platforms a plus.
