Program Assistant, Climate

With a staff of nearly 60 and a budget of over $20 million annually, the Climate program works to promote ambitious climate policies, anchored in strong science and sound economics, in countries around the world, including at the state and federal level in the United States; in the EU, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, and India; and in multilateral forums including the international aviation and shipping sectors and the United Nations climate negotiations. 




Overall Function 


Environmental Defense Fund is currently seeking a full-time Program Assistant in Washington, DC to provide administrative support for staff members in the Global Climate Program. The Global Climate Program, a subset of EDF’s Climate Program, works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions around the world through the promotion of innovative market-based mechanisms, participation in the UN climate negotiations, Low-Emission Rural Development in India, and advocacy for the Reduction of Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) in developing countries. The Program Assistant will perform all necessary administrative tasks to ensure the efficient operation of programmatic activities for the Global Climate Program.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive operational support for the forest team including processing financial invoices, contracts (including working with partners to manage timeframes, any assistance they need with invoicing, etc), reconciling American Express accounts and expense reports for multiple professional staff members, etc.

  • Travel operations: make travel arrangements, prepare itineraries, track expenditure.

  • Plan and manage logistics for climate related workshops and other events in the US and international locations.

  • Assist the financial analyst in tracking program expenditures against budget, updating monthly financial reports, and identify and rectify variances and preparing grant reports.

  • Proactively work with team leadership to meet internal reporting deadlines and improve overall team effectiveness.

  • Prepare and proofread correspondence, briefing memos, charts, tables, graphs, etc.

  • Work independently and as part of a team on special projects, which may include: assisting in the planning, coordination and dissemination of presentations, narrative reports, and other written and web-based information.



  • Undergraduate degree and at least two years’ work experience in a similar position.

  • Strong attention to detail and outstanding organizational abilities.

  • Ability to complete and prioritize multiple tasks under strict deadlines in a high pressure setting.

  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills.

  • Proficiency in Portuguese and Spanish is desired.

  • Ability to work well both alone and with a team of diverse colleagues.

  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Experience working and/or travelling abroad is a plus; some international travel may be required.

  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience in environmental advocacy a plus.
