Oil and Gas Translation and Communications Intern

Overall Function


Environmental Defense Fund’s Oil & Gas Program seeks a highly qualified and deeply motivated student for an internship to translate some of our program’s English documents into Chinese or Chinese documents into English, and communicate progress by organizing webinars and newsletters and compiling science and policy papers to support the minimization of environmental impacts of China’s Oil and gas development, ranging from mitigation of methane emissions to reduction of impacts on water, land and communities. This position will report to the Director for International Policy and Legal Affairs, Oil and Gas and with a dotted reporting line to the Senior Communications Manager in the Oil and Gas program.


Project Background


Through projects that utilize groundbreaking science, policy, and industry engagement, EDF is taking a leading national, and increasingly international, role to ensure that natural gas provides real and sustained carbon benefits without harming the environment or the health of the communities where gas development occurs.  As part of the oil and gas program, the Oil & Gas Translation and Communications Intern will contribute to the development and implementation of protective, science-based policies related to water and land impacts associated with oil and gas operations. 


Responsibilities

  • Translate, edit, and proofread tech/non-tech documents from English to Chinese and/or from Chinese to English, such as briefings, reports, white papers, blogs and newsletters related to oil and gas, climate and environmental subjects; and organize webinars, newsletters and compile science and policy papers, etc.
  • Conduct landscape research to identify and map influential voices in the media concerning oil and gas development in China; determine and inventory top media outlets read by Chinese decision-makers, track and flag relevant coverage tied to oil and gas issues, etc.

 

Qualifications

  • Applicants for internships should hold a relevant undergraduate degree and be enrolled in a relevant graduate program such as translation; translation and interpretation; environmental or energy policy; health science; law or communications.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential and non-routine information.
  • Proven ability to work independently and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated strong work ethic and professional excellence.
  • Work well under pressure and have a sense of urgency.
  • Knowledge of U.S. and China’s environmental, energy and climate policies a plus.
  • Bilingual in Chinese (Mandarin) and English.

 

Duration


Estimated 10-20 hours per week for 3 months with an opportunity for extension for up to six months, depending upon the needs of the program.
