Position Overview

 

The Manager, Grassroots Organizing and Activism is responsible for running the national grassroots advocacy program to recruit and engage online activists to support EDF’s and EDF Action’s political and program priorities with timely, engaging and effective digital grassroots campaigns. Our online activists are also important prospect for new-donor conversion campaigns so this person will coordinate with the rest of Membership to support those fundraising initiatives. And, this person will oversee an effort to develop ladders of engagement for our most active online constituents. These higher bar advocacy opportunities move beyond the standard point and click activism and can include tactics like letter-writing campaigns, virtual events, harnessing our activists’ stories to support the need for environmental progress and organizing trainings and tips to support more impactful advocacy goals and to maintain a strong bond with our most committed constituents.

 

This position reports to the Associate Vice President of Membership and is part of the Membership Department within the broader Development Department. This person will work very closely with the Political Affairs team and with EDF Program experts to develop robust engagement campaigns that push our agenda forward.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as team leader and subject matter expert to develop robust digital grassroots advocacy campaigns to both inspire and bond our constituents with EDF and EDF Action as well as leverage our base of supporters to flex our political muscles in Washington and state capitals around the country.
  • Collaborate with the core Membership team as well as our Political Affairs and Program experts.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal and organizational skills to work with a broad cross-section of diverse stakeholders to develop and vet content and finetune and meet campaign goals.
  • Develop energetic and on-brand online advocacy content that stands out in our constituents’ inboxes and delivers our core messages with our unique, solutions-focused, science-based approach to the world’s most serious environmental challenges.
  • Set up and deploy emails and action alert pages and develop engagement plans to leverage every engagement opportunity to drive more interactions, recruit more supporters and get our message out.
  • Work with online fundraising team to enhance activist-to-donor conversion campaigns.
  • Maintain a calendar of advocacy campaigns to ensure clear coordination with the broader digital teams.
  • Manage the advocacy community and develop, analyze and present activation metrics to track and provide regular, clear reports on the results of digital communication strategies.
  • Serve as the Membership team’s leader to assess our current advocacy platform as well as making recommendations for new engagement tools and tactics to enhance our advocacy campaigns.
  • Help develop and launch social networks promotions and mobile messaging to reach and engage targeted constituents.
  • Conduct specific data and fact research as needed to increase campaign capacity related to recruiting and engaging influential individuals.
  • Manage at least one more junior member of the team.
  • Additional relevant responsibilities as assigned.

 

Preferred candidates will have:

  • Successful experience building and managing coalitions and engaging grassroots activists to create change.
  • Experience working with online CRM/advocacy tools.
  • Experience with the principles of member and activist cultivation and online social networking.
  • Proven fundraising experience converting activists to donors.
  • An interest in being a strong advocate for environmental solutions that protect people and the planet from harm.
  • Basic HTML and design/photoshop skills.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Five or more years of experience working in an online communications or grassroots position, preferably with an environmental focus.
  • Demonstrated online CRM/advocacy experience, especially as it relates to segmenting email files based on previous engagements and interactions as well as some online coding skills.
  • Understanding the complexities of online platforms, systems, dataflows and project management techniques is essential, even if managing these issues is not a primary responsibility.
  • Strong writing skills, specifically as it relates to direct response content, are essential. Coupled with this is a strong interest in relevant news and a drive to be opportunistic and pro-active in rapidly responding to action opportunities.
  • Familiarity with how to run reports and benchmark the performance of campaigns and donor development.
  • Good judgement, initiative, and ability to anticipate problems and follow through with confidence. Multi-tasking, interpersonal and prioritization skills are essential.
  • Ability to work in a diverse team setting as well as independently. Strong time-management and organizational skills are essential.
