Manager, Environmental Justice Policy

Overall Function


The Manager, Environmental Justice Policy will support the Political Affairs and Climate Program teams by providing leadership, support, and strategic vision that help achieve legislative objectives to advance EDF’s Environmental Justice and advocacy goals across program areas. Position reports to AVP Federal Affairs with a dotted line to AVP Environmental Justice & Equity Initiatives.


Key Responsibilities


Government Relations Team Support

  • Provide input regarding equity and environmental justice policy, primarily to the Government Relations team

  • Manage the process of applying an Environmental Justice screen to legislation EDF has been asked to support or provide comments on

  • Identify Environmental Justice strengths and weaknesses for the Government Relations team to incorporate into the decision-making process

Policy Analysis and Advocacy

  • Review and analyze additional policy documents including sign-on letters for Environmental Justice strengths and weaknesses

  • Develop policy proposals for EDF to advance legislation that is under development

  • Engage with lobby team to suggest amendments or additions to draft legislation to incorporate Environmental Justice concepts and ideas.

  • Advocate for policy positions in conjunction with Program Leaders

  • Develop and maintain partnerships with key allies

Cross-Program Support

  • Where necessary and possible, provide guidance to other EDF programs working on policy development

  • Work across programs as necessary and provide subject matter expertise to develop ideas and options around Environmental Justice policy


  • Representative for Political Affairs on the EDF Environmental Justice Council

  • Help manage or convene ally organizations to generate more shared policy positions

  • Participates in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values

  • Other duties as assigned



The successful applicant will have proven interest in advocacy campaigns and a passion for advancing solutions to climate change. Applicant will have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and generally have at least six years of related experience including professional, voluntary, and community activity related to environmental justice, community engagement, and/or policy, or an advanced degree with at least four years of related experience

  • Demonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures, backgrounds, and experiences

  • Demonstrated experience coordinating teams

  • Experience on Capitol Hill, policy advocacy, or policy development a plus

  • Relationship builder with experience managing personnel, partners and/or consultants

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, both independently and as a member of teams in a dynamic and creative environment

  • Comfort working across teams, programs, and communities
