The Virginia Director, Coastal Resilience is a member of the EDF’s Coastal Resilience team within the Ecosystems Program. EDF’s Coastal Resilience program works in a bold and collaborative manner to ensure resilient ecosystems and communities along coasts and rivers thrive with water and are safe, equitable and prosperous places to live, work and play. This multi-faceted program deals with the many complex challenges associated with restoring natural system to create sustainable communities with improved infrastructure and robust economies.
EDF’s Coastal Resilience, Virginia program works to safeguard the ecology, economy and communities of the Tidewater Region in the face of impacts from climate change. Working under the direction of the Senior Director, Coastal Resilience, the Virginia Director’s primary role will center on overseeing the program initiative and achieving program outcomes. The Virginia Director, Coastal Resilience will play a pivotal role in building and maintaining collaborative partnerships that work together to advocate for comprehensive, ambitious, science-based and equitable coastal planning and policies for the Tidewater Region. This will require managing a team of supporting staff and consultants, continuing to build a strong alliance of advisors and collaborators, and raising the public prominence of resilience approaches and specific strategies. The Virginia Director will interact regularly with senior management and other staff members to maintain a well-functioning and effective team to tackle the political, economic and scientific challenges of building coastal resilience in the face of climate change.
This position will be based in Virginia with regular travel to the VA coastal region and Richmond.
- The Director will have the primary responsibility for executing strategy and contributing to the development of effective policies and practices.
- Direct the execution and refinement of EDF’s Virginia Coastal Resilience team strategy including strategy development, partner outreach, project management, and deliverables oversight.
- Create and cultivate strong partnerships with a diverse set of interests and backgrounds to build wide-spread support to advance resilience policies and funding. Develop a collective advocacy platform.
- Manage a cross functional team of EDF staff, consultants, and outside stakeholders to develop, refine, and implement our strategies.
- Develop elements of the Coastal Resilience Playbook for Virginia and advocate for key measures to be integrated into ongoing state and regional coastal planning, specifically the 2021 Coastal Resilience Master Plan.
- Participate as part of the leadership team of the Coastal Resilience Program in shaping and guiding strategies.
- Develop and manage project budgets, including planning, fundraising, and professional fee expenditure oversight.
- Collaborate effectively across multiple EDF programs, including the Office of Chief Economist, Office of the Chief Scientist, EDF+ Business and Political Affairs.
- Assist in fundraising efforts for the team, including working closely with EDF Development staff, writing high quality proposals and reports, cultivating individual donors, and contributing to major foundation relationships.
- Serve as a thought leader in the relevant area through public speaking and written communications.
- Support and manage direct report(s) and the professional development of other members of the team, included but not limited to direct reports.
- Willing to travel as necessary to accomplish goals and manage partnerships.
- A minimum of 10 years of substantive, relevant work experience.
- Advanced degree in a relevant field preferred (e.g., economics, business/law, environmental policy or science).
- Thorough knowledge of status and trends in coastal resilience issues in Virginia.
- Established relationships and experience in coastal Virginia is preferred.
- Collaborative experience and cross-organizational management skills.
- Demonstrated experience developing strategies, managing partnerships, and leading, managing and implementing projects.
- Experience in fundraising both in stewarding donors and helping to secure large gifts preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage and mentor staff.
- Demonstrated ability to work constructively with nonprofit colleagues and partners, scientists, economists, industry, regulators and public policy decision makers.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Creative and innovative thinker willing to challenge the status quo and propose new ideas and opportunities.
- Proven ability to work both independently and as a member of small teams in a fast-paced, dynamic and creative environment with diverse populations.
- Experience managing a diverse workload.
