Director, Global Agriculture Methane

The Director, Global Agricultural Methane, will lead a cross-cutting team at EDF to address these challenges and scale methane reduction strategies across the world. This role, a key leader within the Climate-Smart Ag team and People & Nature program will report to the Vice President, Climate-Smart Ag. The Director will bolster EDF’s leadership on the ag methane agenda, catalyze a growing global strategy and connect dots across the organization to ensure effective teamwork and management.

 

Methane is expected to cause nearly half of the projected temperature rise due to new greenhouse gas emissions over the next two decades. Agriculture is the largest source of human-caused methane emissions globally (approximately 40%), and livestock alone accounts for approximately one-third of those emissions.

 

This role can be based remotely or out of an EDF office location in any time zone with reasonable overlap across both the Americas and European Union business hours. Candidates based in the EU must have the right to live and work in the EU when applying.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaboratively develop and execute a focused global agricultural methane strategy, with engagement from stakeholders across the organization.
  • Develop yearly work plans for global advocacy work and co-develop the workplans for EDF’s current core regions (U.S., India, China and the EU) with the region leads, ensuring work plans are interrelated, build upon each other, and lead with science, economics, corporate partnerships, and smart policy, culminating in culturally appropriate targeted advocacy.  
  • Lead and manage a work plan across a matrixed organizational structure in order to maximize impact.
  • Engage with government, livestock sector, corporate, or other leaders on the importance of ag methane strategies.
  • Effectively communicate progress, challenges, and opportunities to stakeholders, board members, EDF senior leadership, and other internal and external audiences.
  • Represent EDF in high-level panels, conferences, and direct engagements.
  • Serve as a leader for the Climate-Smart Ag team, including managing and mentoring staff.
  • Oversee consultants and coordinate with staff and partners to ensure aligned execution of work to achieve results and work closely with financial operations lead on budget matters.
  • Participates in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values
  • Play an important role in fundraising, including drafting proposals, growing relationships with donors and foundation officers, tracking and reporting progress, and other functions. With the Vice President, work to cultivate new funders and individuals to contribute to the fundraising goals. Liaise with EDF Executive Team and Board of Trustees as needed.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least twelve years of related experience, or a Masters degree and at least ten years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated experience creating and executing strategies, including managing a matrixed team of experts to deliver results.
  • Expert-level knowledge of agriculture, greenhouse gas mitigation, livestock production, global policy, or other relevant field.
  • Proven results from advocacy in the environmental and agricultural sectors.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong strategic thinking and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and apply new concepts to strategic planning and recommendations.    
  • Proven fundraising skills, including proposal writing, donor reporting, project tracking, and budget execution.
  • Self-starter, detail oriented, well-organized, and able to plan and execute projects from conception to completion.
  • Demonstrated capacity to bring constituents together toward a common goal, build strategic relationships, and successfully advocate for environmental issues.
  • Demonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Willingness and ability to engage in travel, including international travel, up to 10% of time.
