Program Overview

Healthy oceans are the lifeblood of our planet. But they’re in peril - from climate change, overfishing, habitat destruction, and other threats. That’s why EDF’s Climate Resilient Fisheries & Oceans team is working to safeguard the oceans and protect nature while feeding the planet, creating more secure livelihoods, and bolstering more equitable societies for human well-being. One of the greatest threats to the oceans is overfishing, which is why our dedicated team of scientists, economists, and fishery management experts are collaborating with partners around the globe to make sustainable fishing the norm. Through our work in the United States, Latin America, and Asia Pacific, we draw on strong science and economic principles to advance sustainable fishing practices, forward-looking policies and innovative tools that support the health of our oceans and the people who depend on them for food and their livelihoods.

 

Overall Function

The Director will be a key leader in the Climate Resilient Fisheries & Oceans team within the broader People and Nature team. As a member of the Fishery Solutions Center (FSC), reporting to the FSC’s Associate Vice President, the Director will lead global, cross-cutting initiatives and partnerships that advance climate resilience in fisheries, fishing communities and ecosystems. They will lead initiatives that seek to improve climate resilience across a range of fishery contexts, with emphasis on small-scale fisheries, solutions for low-governance contexts, community wellbeing, equity and environmental justice. The Director will lead a team responsible for the FSC’s development and delivery of policy and management guidance, technical tools, learning networks and communities of practice, and capacity development initiatives. They will develop and maintain partnerships with diverse stakeholders including intergovernmental organizations, governments, NGOs, academic institutions, civil society organizations and organizations that represent fishers and fishworkers. The Director will represent EDF in international forums, particularly those that elevate and advance solutions for small-scale fisheries. They will also be responsible for putting in place standards and practices for strengthening EDF’s role in advancing equity and justice in our fisheries and oceans work.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic partnerships and initiatives to develop and deliver the cutting-edge strategies, policy guidance, tools, technical resources, and capacities needed to advance climate-resilient fisheries globally.
  • Oversee research and policy design projects that help address key gaps in fisheries management related to climate change and climate resilience and lead efforts with academics and other experts to evaluate and develop cutting edge approaches for building resilience in fisheries and fishing communities.
  • Lead efforts with internal and external collaborators and expert advisors to advance equity and environmental justice in EDF’s fisheries and oceans work by developing new partnerships and initiatives, and by updating our tools and approaches.
  • Oversee key strategic initiatives – including the Small-Scale Fisheries Resource and Collaboration Hub (SSF Hub) – with the goals of supporting widespread application of effective policies and practices for small-scale fisheries management, across a range of geographic, cultural, political and ecological contexts.
  • Oversee effective operation, application, and ongoing updates to the SSF Hub and the FSC’s Climate-Resilient Fisheries Toolkit to ensure fishery stakeholders around the world have access to the best available research- and experience-driven tools and resources.
  • Oversee partnerships and projects to strengthen leadership and technical capacity among fisheries actors, develop and strengthen regional and global communities of practice and learning networks, and accelerate uptake of sustainable, climate-resilient fisheries solutions.
  • Coordinate with other EDF teams including regional teams, science team, natural climate solutions team, resilient food systems team, oceans technology solutions team and others to ensure the program advances effective and unified strategies based on the best available tools and approaches for climate-resilient fisheries.
  • Cultivate a network of external partners, including multilaterals, governments, NGOs, and fisher organizations, particularly those dedicated to advancing small-scale fisheries strategies and implementation of FAO’s Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries.
  • In partnership with the EDF’s Marketing & Communications team, oversee and manage EDF’s participation in relevant public events, forums, and conferences, and external communications pertaining to climate-resilient fisheries, secure fishing rights, small-scale fisheries, and related topics.
  • Manage a team of staff, consultants, and partners to successfully execute team strategies and achieve project and grant deliverables and contribute to professional development of the team.
  • Develop and manage project budgets, including planning, expenditure tracking, and oversight.
  • Communicate project vision and results to EDF staff, partners, funders, and other stakeholders through reports, presentations, and other methods. Develop and apply appropriate means for measuring project success and impact.
  • Support fundraising efforts for strategic initiatives relating to resilience design, capacity building and small-scale fisheries, and lead development of proposals and grant/donor reports in partnership with EDF’s Development team.
  • Participate in advancing EDF’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion goals, in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.

 

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in environmental science, marine science, international policy or related field.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge of fisheries science and management concepts, approaches and processes, and ability to relate concepts and best practices to regional contexts.
  • Strong working knowledge of international development issues related to small-scale fisheries, including natural resource management challenges and their intersection with livelihoods, food security, and equity.
  • Familiarity with international fishery management institutions and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage people and a diverse project portfolio.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including a high degree of comfort delivering technical presentations and facilitating collaborative discussions with internal staff and outside stakeholders.
  • Excellent ability to coordinate and collaborate with multiple stakeholders, colleagues and partners of varied backgrounds and experience.
  • A high degree of diplomacy to manage and influence key stakeholders, teams, and new, developing partnerships.
  • Demonstrated self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Creative and innovative thinker willing to challenge the status quo and propose new ideas and opportunities.

  • Proficiency in the use of standard business software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability and willingness to travel, including internationally.
  • English fluency (written and oral) required and multilingual fluency a plus (e.g., Spanish, Bahasa Indonesia, Chinese, Japanese, French).

The pay range for this role is 121,000 - 133,000 USD which takes into account factors such as candidate experience, skills, training, internal team equity and local norms.
