Director, Financial Operations

Overall Function

The Director of Financial Operations, working closely with and reporting directly to the Controller, will be tasked with design, development and implementation of all accounting activities as they relate to accounts payable, contribution revenue and support, and payroll.  The Director of Financial Operations will have three direct reports who are responsible for the day-to-day operations of these groups. This position will also be responsible for cash management/treasury function; ensuring bank accounts are adequately funded and restricted/unrestricted cash is properly housed. The Director of Financial Operations will need to determine the impact on financial and accounting systems of proposed procedures, transactions, and other business activities, and make recommendations for action.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Accounts Payable
    • Oversee payment of invoices, expense reports, consultants and grants
    • Develop, maintain and enforce written policy and procedures in relation to accounts payable/cash disbursements
    • Provide strategic input to programs and team membersto understand disbursements in foreign currency
    • Be instrumental in implementing a new invoice/expense system (Concur) capable of handling multicurrency
    • Ensure employees are adhering to the expense reimbursement policies
    • Manage all intercompany relationships for accuracy and proper settlement
    • Administer credit card program
  • Gift Processing
    • Oversee the quality controls in relation to gift processing
    • Develop, maintain and enforce written policy and procedures in relation to contributions received
    • Lead end to end reengineering of gift processing
    • Ensure general ledger account coding of gifts received is accurate; restricted (for time/purpose) and unrestrictedand in accordance with GAAP
    • Provide strategic input to team members to understand gifts received in foreign currency
    • Manage relationship with third party gift processors
  • Payroll
    • Develop and control all tasks necessary to accomplish the organization’s payroll processing objectives
    • Oversee payroll tax processing
    • Oversee application and validity of international payroll
  • Treasury
    • Develop international cash and liquidity management model; create a framework for managing financial risk
    • Enhance and implement global banking strategy; implement global treasury platform and identify areas for improvement and efficiency
    • Ensure strong banking relationships and compliance with banking requirement
  • Monitor and develop solutions to issues that arise in daily accounting activities
  • Complete month end closing tasks for all areas under supervision per the communicated closing timeline
  • Drive business processes to improve efficiency and meet organization goals
  • Cross-train staff to maintain adequate coverage


  • 10+ years of accounting/finance experience with 3-5 years in a similar or related position as lead of the accounting operations
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or financial management preferred or MBA
  • Six Sigma or equivalent credentials around process reengineering and/or quality control
  • Demonstrated experience with international cash management and FX risk management; vendor management (in particular payment service providers), managing cross functional teams
  • Extensive experience with team leadership and resource management
  • Strong ability to problem solve and work independently
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple time-sensitive projects with a firm commitment to meeting deadlines
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively to internal and external customers
  • Experience working with senior management
  • Not for profit experience a plus
