Direct Mail Creative Strategist & Copywriter

Overall Function:

 

The Direct Mail Creative Strategist & Copywriter plays a key role on the Development-Membership team. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation as a creative strategist who can develop compelling themes from EDF’s program work and as a copywriter to convert those themes into strong direct mail copy that effectively interprets and communicates EDF’s often complex program initiatives in ways that are relevant and motivating to achieve  Membership’s fundraising goals. Candidate must also be able to work closely with our direct mail graphic designer and our production manager to ensure copy and package design work well together to engage donors while adhering to EDF’s brand guidelines.


Key Responsibilities
             

Develops direct mail creative concepts and copy for successful fundraising packages to engage with the following audiences:

  • House-file donors including mid-level donors who give tens of millions of dollars per year.
  • Monthly donors.
  • Non-donor activists and outside prospect lists to recruit new members.
  • Lapsed donors to encourage reinstatement.
  • Develops direct mail packages for the following types of campaigns: Appeals, Renewals, Prospecting/Activist Conversions, Reinstatements and Cultivations.

  • Follows best-practices and maintains EDF’s tone, voice and brand standards.

  • Collaborates with Development-Membership colleagues—especially graphic designer and production manager—to brainstorm concepts and message strategy for upcoming fundraising campaigns and packages.

  • Works with EDF’s program and communications experts to stay up-to-date on our program initiatives and is able to translate our often nuanced and detailed environmental policy solutions into clear, concise and engaging direct mail copy.

  • Strong direct mail copywriting skills that utilize good spelling, grammar and editorial styles.

  • Strong time management skills and the ability to manage multiple copy projects and deadlines.

  • As time permits, works with the online and telemarketing teams to review and edit online content and telemarketing scripts.

 

Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in Marketing, Advertising, Communications or Journalism preferred.

  • Minimum 7-10 years’ experience writing direct mail.

  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively.

  • Experience using general office equipment, computers, word processing and spreadsheet applications (Microsoft Word and Excel) required.
