The Executive Director is responsible for developing EDF’s overall strategy, as well as driving and delivering on the organization’s vision. Our work has become increasingly global as more governments and NGOs around the world ask EDF to consult on their challenges, which require international solutions. As a result, a focus of the Executive Director is developing and leading EDF’s global growth strategy so that we can quickly scale solutions to major environmental challenges, and create a resilient future where people and nature prosper.
The Communications Manager will carry out a mix of communications and external affairs responsibilities for the Executive Director. The manager will develop communications plans and media outreach strategies that drive the Executive Director’s profile as a thought leader, primarily internationally, with an audience of global business leaders and policy experts in the regions and countries where we operate. The manager will identify these international audiences and the major speaking platforms and channels that reach them. In accordance with her travel schedule, the manager will create opportunities for the Executive Director to network with and speak to target audiences and interview with media in Europe, Asia and Mexico.
This position requires an understanding of global issues, cultures and players, and an ability to position EDF and the Executive Director effectively on the issues most important to us. It also requires the ability to build effective relationships internally to gather needed information in advance of key meetings, speeches and travels abroad. Reporting to the VP of Communications, the Communications Manager writes, edits and produces a range of communications materials while securing positive media coverage of EDF, the Executive Director and our work in top-tier international outlets.
- Serve as the principal communications liaison for the Executive Director with program and department staff working on our four focus areas – Climate, Oceans, Ecosystems and Health.
- Identify international business and key policy experts and the channels that reach them.
- Work with programs and departments to develop background research, briefing materials, speeches, op-eds, messages, talking points, blogs and other materials.
- Focus on international media outlets and develop a system of keeping them updated; arrange media interviews for the Executive Director and other senior staff.
- Monitor and report media coverage.
- Lead development and production of weekly and monthly email reports to top donors, coordinating with the Development writing team; draft emails as needed, working with program and Development teams.
- Work closely with the Digital Management Team and manage the Executive Director’s Twitter handle as needed.
- Coordinate, write and manage Executive Directors’ content for LinkedIn, Forbes, and EDF blogs.
- Bachelor’s degree with at least six years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with at least four years’ experience.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with ability to effectively present in large and small groups and write polished, publishable articles and opinion pieces.
- Excellent organizational skills, including ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Proven ability to integrate and coordinate communications efforts across multiple organizations.
- Knowledge of media; established contacts with reporters and editors.
- Knowledge of global business community and leaders; established contacts with businesses and trade associations in Europe and/or China a plus.
- Computer proficiency in MS Office and familiarity with Internet research.
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- A bright, self-starter capable of working independently with light supervision.
