Recap of past transportation policy victories

Accounts of past policy victories our staff advocated for.

  • Updates on clean car progress - In June 2009, EPA granted California's long-standing request for a Clean Air Act waiver, immediately clearing the way for vehicle emissions standards to cut global warming pollution in California and 13 other states.

In 2011, rather than face a patchwork quilt of different state regulations, automakers agreed to a stricter federal standard.

  • EDF has been a stalwart proponent of California's efforts to reduce emissions from diesel engines and vehicles currently in use.

In 2000, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) developed their "Risk Reduction Plan to Reduce Particulate Matter Emissions from Diesel-Fueled Engines and Vehicles" (DRRP) and EDF has encouraged and promoted subsequent legislation as part of the DRRP.

  • Update (9/17/2009) - The New York City Council passed landmark legislation that will dramatically reduce toxic engine emisssions from public school buses. See news release.

New York City has one of the largest public school bus systems in the U. S. The city's Department of Education (DOE) transports more than 138,000 students using about 6,700 diesel school buses.

  • Most of Texas' 35,000 school buses run on diesel fuel and emit tons of unhealthy pollution that gets trapped inside the bus, where children breathe it in.
