Andy Maguire is Vice President for Health and leads EDF’s expanding efforts to harness new scientific advances, sound economics, and forward-looking policies to reduce the threat of toxic chemicals to human health.
Andy’s diverse career is filled with experience building successful institutions and programs and he has a passion to accomplish transformational changes in environmental health.
Background
Andy served as a Member of Congress from New Jersey (from 1975-81) where he played a leading role on the Health and Environment Subcommittee. He authored or co-authored provisions of the Clean Air Act, the National Cancer Act, and toxics legislation, including establishing the inter-agency Report on Carcinogens, improved auto emissions standards, and prevention of significant deterioration air quality legislation.
He has broad international experience as well, having served as Advisor on Political and Security Affairs at the State Department’s U.S. Mission to the United Nations.
After leaving Congress, he was VP for Policy Affairs at the World Resources Institute where he built a program to formulate policy regarding US economic, security and political interests in addressing world resource and environmental problems.
After that Andy was President and CEO of EnterpriseWorks Worldwide, a not-for-profit corporation that assists farmers, small-scale entrepreneurs and producer associations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to create enterprises that improve the health and livelihoods of families through increasing productivity, incomes, and competitiveness.
Most recently he served as a senior advisor to the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization’s Every Child Campaign and to Clean Air-Cool Planet where he built a bi-partisan outreach initiative to engage opinion leaders, the public, and decision makers on climate change.
Andy graduated from Oberlin College and received a Ph.D. from Harvard University. He was a consultant to the Ford Foundation and a Fellow at the Kennedy School. He has served on the board of Pharmaceutical Resources, Inc., and on advisory councils at Common Cause and the United Nations Association-USA.
