Getting Started

Getting Started

If your company is just starting to address its environmental impact, welcome. You can make satisfying progress through near-term changes, and we encourage you to do that.

But you'll see the biggest environmental and financial gains in the long term by incorporating environmental opportunities into your overall business strategy.

Regardless of the type, size or location of your company, here are five fundamental steps you can take to understand your company's biggest environmental opportunities, then set ambitious yet achievable goals across your entire organization.

  • 1. Inventory
  • 2. Set Goals
  • 3. Prioritize
  • 4. Communicate
  • 5. Take Action

Step 1: Understand your environmental impact

First, take an inventory of resources used and waste and pollutants generated throughout your operations. For most companies, the categories for such an inventory include:

  • Resource inputs such as energy, water, chemicals and other supplies; and
  • Releases, such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, releases to air and water, solid waste outputs.

Your inventory will highlight which parts of your operations are most resource-intensive and generate the most pollution and waste -- and thus present the greatest potential for improvement. Often, a company will begin with an environmental inventory or “footprint analysis” of its own operations, and then expand the analysis to include impacts throughout its supply chain.

You may wish to hire consultants to help you conduct your inventory, though there are also free resources available on the web to guide you.
