Work

Dr. Schwartzman works directly with indigenous peoples, forest peoples, government officials and international policy makers to develop strategies to protect tropical rainforests. He has been actively engaged in the Brazilian Amazon for over two decades, and today serves as a liaison between indigenous leaders and policy makers at all levels.

Dr. Schwartzman’s areas of expertise include Amazon peoples, Brazil forests, reducing emissions from tropical deforestation (REDD), economic incentives for environmental protection, international institutions & agreements, international environmental law, U.S. Congress and international aspects of U.S. climate legislation.

Background

Before coming to EDF, Dr. Schwartzman represented Brazil’s International Institute for Socio-Economic Studies (ISA) and served as a coordinator for the U.S.-Brazil Tropical Forest Action Network and a consultant for the Anthropology Resource Center. He received his PhD in Anthropology from the University of Chicago.
