Alaska’s dangerous fishing derbies for king crab have recently been replaced by an innovative catch share system that gives fishermen more flexibility and an incentive to conserve fish.
The fishing gear used (traps) do little damage to seafloor habitats and populations are recovering from past overfishing.
Most king crab on the U.S. market comes from Russia, where fishing regulations are poorly enforced.
