Eco Details

  • Several species of grouper are depleted, but red grouper from the Gulf of Mexico is no longer overfished.
  • One reason for groupers' dwindling numbers is their unusual mating ritual: mature fish come together to spawn in huge numbers that make them easy targets for fishermen. This removes many reproducing fish and threatens the recovery of depleted populations.
  • Commercial and recreational fishing of Nassau grouper and goliath grouper (jewfish) are now prohibited in U.S. waters.
