This winter, Representative Ron Kind (D-WI) introduced HR. 1551, the Healthy Farms, Foods and Fuels Act of 2007.  This landmark legislation, would dramatically expand conservation programs, help rural communities, and provide consumers with better access to healthy food choices.

The Healthy Farms, Food and Fuels Act (HR 1551) will:

  • Double funding for conservation incentives and assistance to farmers, ranchers and forest landowners.
  • Provide unprecedented funding for the restoration of wildlife habitat, including wetlands and grasslands.
  • Protect more than 6 million acres of farm, ranch and forest land from sprawl.
  • Provide new incentives for “cooperative” conservation projects that engage groups of producers to address local and regional challenges.
  • Promote renewable energy development on farms, ranches and forest lands.
  • Link producers with consumers through farmers markets and farm-to-cafeteria initiatives, and provide new assistance to low-income and elderly consumers.
  • Expand a popular fruit and vegetable snack program to more schools.
  • Assist farmer transition to organic food production.
