In 2007, Congress will renew federal farm and food programs, creating a rare opportunity for reform.

Farm and food policy shapes the environment, rural communities and the fate of farmers at home and abroad. These programs also dramatically influence consumers and taxpayers.

Despite topping $15 billion in most years, federal farm spending does not do enough to help most farmers and ranchers weather the ups and downs of agriculture, encourage economic innovation, promote energy production or reward stewardship, or plan for the future.

Passage of a new Farm Bill in 2007 is a chance for Congress to boost farm and ranch profitability, reward stewardship and economic innovation, create new sources of energy on farms and provide consumers with more healthy food and energy choices.
