EDF on HuffPo: Scaling up ecomarkets

In a new blog post on Huff Post Green, Dr. Rod Fujita, EDF's Director of Research and Development for our Oceans Program, explains the growing need for harnessing market forces to take oceans conservation to the next level. 

The current mainstay for many environmental efforts -- regulation -- can be effective, yet also expensive, hard to enforce and may run counter to economic self interest, he points out.

Instead, it's time to move forward with the concept of ecomarkets, which work with economic forces to incentivize stewardship and compliance with conservation regulation. Many of these ecomarkets EDF is already actively involved in, such as catch shares, cap and trade, and payments for ecosystem services.
