2012: Another year for the weather record books

As the Associated Press put it, this past year's weather was "deadly, costly and record-breaking everywhere -- especially in the United States."

Many U.S. cities roasted in the summer heat, drought struck most of the country's heartland, and Hurricane Sandy battered the Northeast, flooding many coastal areas. "Every year is bringing different types of extreme weather and climate events," NOAA chief Jane Lubchenco said in the AP article. "All storms today are happening in a climate-altered world."
