New book examines safety of BPA and other chemicals of concern

We are all just a little bit plastic. Traces of bisphenol A or BPA, a chemical used in plastics production, are widely detected in our bodies and environment.

Is this chemical, and its presence in the human body, safe? What is meant by safety?

These questions are explored in a new book, Is It Safe?: BPA and the Struggle to Define the Safety of Chemicals, authored by EDF’s Health Director Sarah Vogel.

“From the 1950s to the present, I uncover how science and political power shape conflicts and decisions over the risks and safety of chemicals that make up the modern world,” Vogel said.

The book is available on Amazon.com or at University of California Press.
