As Gulf waits for funding, a new oil slick shows spill isn't over

Last week, an ugly truth resurfaced in the form of a three-mile oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico. As suspected, the slick was confirmed to be oil from the 2010 gulf oil disaster — further proof that the long-term effects of such a catastrophe are unknown and ongoing.

Meanwhile, though, BP is stalling on Clean Water Act penalty payments due for environmental and economic restorations that would help the region put this disaster behind them.

"The sooner full payment happens, the sooner environmental and economic restoration can begin for this region," reads a joint statement from EDF, the National Audubon Society and the National Wildlife Federation. "We owe it to the Gulf of Mexico — one of our national treasures — to make sure BP does right for the people, wildlife and habitat of this region.”
