Newer trucks at Houston's port help clean the air

Major shipping ports bring countless economic benefits to local communities, but all that coming and going of goods — from consumer products to crude oil — pollutes the air.

At the Port of Houston, older diesel trucks that move cargo containers, known as drayage trucks, are to blame for at least one-third of the air pollution. To help clean the air, EDF and several partners developed a program to allow truck drivers to obtain newer, cleaner running trucks using grants and low-interest loans.

The result? Major reductions in several key pollutants.
