How to save cod — before it's too late

The once-abundant cod found in New England waters are no more — the decline in fish has been so steep that President Obama recently declared the groundfishery a disaster, allowing federal funds to be spent to help the fisherman who rely on the industry.

But to truly restore the fishery — and rescue an entire species from the brink — those dollars must be invested wisely, says Johanna Thomas, EDF director of our ocean program's New England and Pacific regions, and Matt Mullin, New England deputy director, in an editorial published in the Bangor Daily News.

Thomas and Mullin outline five key steps to help revive the groundfish industry, like improved monitoring of catches, studying the effects of climate change on fish, and encouraging consumers to eat abundant fish found in the same waters, like redfish.
