Overall Function
The Bowes Fellowship seeks recent graduates of advanced degree programs in business or environmental management for a three-year position with EDF.  The Fellowship is designed to allow EDF to launch and execute high-leverage projects that achieve environmental results today, while providing the Fellow with valuable experience that will help him or her to bridge the divide between theory and practice from graduate school into the working world.  

Reporting to the Managing Director focused on strategy for the Corporate Partnership team, the Bowes Fellow Manager will play a critical role in leading the development, execution, and replication of corporate partnership projects.  The incumbent will develop recommendations and action steps based on rigorous economic, financial, technical and environmental analysis, using advanced knowledge of corporate strategy, operations, and environmental management.  Project outcomes must be practically and technically sound from a business perspective, yet aggressively address environmental concerns.  Moreover, the recommendations must be adaptable to other businesses operating in the same or related industries.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Identify and develop relationships with companies in target industries with the aim of gathering information, developing project ideas, and recruiting partners.
  • Manage and support corporate partnerships by overseeing  budgets  for project work, developing workplans, negotiating project agreements and scopes of work, identifying and procuring necessary resources, project work and deliverables.
  • Manage private sector engagement components of projects that may include leveraging the investor community; supporting the adoption of jurisdictional REDD; and mitigating the impacts of agricultural commodities on ecosystems and fisheries.
  • Communicate various project goals and results to EDF staff, companies, policymakers, environmental groups, the media and the public through reports, interviews, presentations, and other methods.
  • Develop and apply appropriate means for measuring the success of corporate partnerships.
  • In addition to these responsibilities, the incumbent will play an integral role in other activities including fundraising, evaluating and recommending new project ideas; disseminating and communicating project results; and being a team player in the development of a vibrant and entrepreneurial program.
Qualifications
  • A master’s degree in environmental studies, economics, public policy, or business administration;
  • At least 5 years professional experience working on environmental issues in a business context, including the use of market mechanisms and policy solutions and relevant professional experience in the finance industry or agriculture commodities sector preferred;
  • A broad understanding of environmental issues including the impacts of supply chains and global trade on climate, fresh water, and ocean health;
  • A working knowledge of the current theory and practice of corporate sustainability, and the role business can play in solving environmental problems;
  • A working knowledge of environmental and carbon markets (including REDD and Catch Shares);
  • Knowledge of the global food system, including key actors, incentives, industry structure;
  • Experience in project management and exceptional personal organization and attention to detail;
  • An ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, both independently and as a member of small teams in a dynamic and creative environment;
  • Strong analytical skills and experience performing rigorous analysis in support of highly visible work;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work with colleagues and partners of varied backgrounds and experience; and,
  • Ability to travel 5-6 days a month for conferences and meetings.
Location
This position is may be based in Boston, MA, New York, NY or Washington, DC. 

Term
This is a 3 year term position.
