INTERNS: Legal Interns for Summer 2013

INTERN: LEGAL INTERN, CLIMATE AND AIR PROGRAM

With world attention focused on both the environment and the economy, Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) is where policymakers and business leaders turn for win-win solutions. This leading green group, with programs from Boston to Beijing, has tripled in size over the past decade by focusing on strong science, uncommon partnerships and market-based approaches. You can be part of a vibrant workplace that welcomes diverse perspectives, talents and contributions, where innovation and a focus on results are a way of life.

Environmental Defense Fund' s Rocky Mountain and Washington Offices are seeking highly qualified and deeply motivated law students for summer 2013 legal internships to work on projects related to climate change, air quality, and energy.

Key Responsibilities

Legal interns will be deeply involved in assisting EDF's Climate and Air legal team in ongoing matters.  Previous interns have researched, written, and presented legal and policy documents for federal court litigation, administrative litigation, national and state regulatory proceedings, and various policy venues.  For example, research activities have supported: U.S. Supreme Court litigation over global warming and power plant emissions; D.C. Circuit litigation over greenhouse gas regulation under the Clean Air Act, major new health-based air quality standards, and rules to reduce industrial air pollution; advocacy to reduce global warming pollution; major national and regional policy initiatives on air quality and climate change; international agreements and guidelines regarding trans-boundary pollution control programs in the U.S./Mexico border region; protection of air quality and ecological systems in national parks; and coal bed methane development and NEPA implications.

Qualifications

We seek students interested in working on cutting edge regional, national, and international climate and air quality issues.  Law students who will have completed their second year of law school are preferred.  Exceptional candidates who have only completed one year of law school will be considered.  We are seeking law students with excellent research, analytical, writing and advocacy skills with the ability to think strategically and work on fast-paced, dynamic issues.

Location

The Rocky Mountain Office is located in Boulder, Colorado, nestled at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, about 25 miles northwest of Denver.  Boulder, home of the University of Colorado, is renowned for its stunning scenery, lofty peaks and beautiful blue skies.  It is also a haven for those who love the great outdoors, and is rich with extraordinary hiking, running, and mountain biking trails, road cycling opportunities, fly fishing lakes and streams, and premier rock climbing.

The Washington, D.C. Office is located just north of Dupont Circle—near historic Georgetown, the vibrant U Street and Adams Morgan neighborhoods, and the White House.  Summers in Washington offer the opportunity to sample the city’s dizzying array of outstanding museums, venerable monuments, diverse restaurants, theatre, music, and (often free) cultural and civic events.  Also not to be missed: the Fourth of July fireworks on the National Mall; kayaking on the Potomac; Friday night jazz in the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden; hiking in Shenandoah National Park; and Dorothy’s ruby red slippers.

Ten weeks during the summer

Hours

Applications are considered immediately and on a rolling basis.

Due to the volume of employment applications and queries received, EDF is unable to respond to each application individually. Applicants will be contacted directly if selected as a candidate.
