At EDF, we don’t just work for environmental values—we live them. We integrate green practices into all our offices and operations.
For example, we use only 100% postconsumer recycled paper and emphasize reduced paper use and recycling. We also offer transit benefits to reduce commuting pollution and prioritize videoconferencing over plane travel wherever possible.
Staff initiatives
An employee greening committee regularly reviews our practices and implements new programs. Recent additions include worm composting in several offices and the installation of an economizer in our Boston office that, during cooler months, draws cold air into the server room, eliminating the use of an air conditioner.
Community involvement
EDF staff bring their passion for greening to the community as well. A few examples:
The head of our employee greening committee recently gave a “green your life” presentation to young people who are part of City Year New York, which provides tutors and mentors to some of the city’s most underserved children.
In Raleigh, our North Carolina staff go out four times a year to pick up trash along Reedy Creek Road not far from the office. They are helping to beautify the state’s growing Greenway system, which gives people a safe place to walk, run or bicycle.
Green offices
EDF’s facilities have won prestigious recognition from the Green Business Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program: our Washington, D.C office won LEED Silver and our San Francisco office won LEED Gold.
Green features of EDF’s new facilities include:
- Extensive use of natural light with floor to ceiling glass office fronts
- Equipment and furniture high in recycled content
- D.C. office chairs use 100% recycled seating fabric
- Countertops in the San Francisco office consist of 100% postconsumer recycled paper
- Non-toxic interior paint
- Location within a few blocks of mass transit
- The San Francisco office recycled 95% of construction waste.
