Extending a welcome mat to wildlife

Who would have believed that the warbler's best chance of survival would start out on a U.S. Army base?

David Wolfe EDF Director of Conservation Science

With the last major tract of nesting habitat for the endangered golden-cheeked warbler located in Ft. Hood, Texas, we set out to persuade the U.S. Army to help save the birds. And it worked!

With the Army’s help, nearby Hill Country landowners developed similar habitat, and the warblers are thriving. In fact, the program has been so successful it now includes endangered black-capped vireos and is expanding from six to 34 counties all across the Hill Country.
