Storm Surge Risk: Hilton Head, South Carolina

Posted: 29-May-2007; Updated: 30-Jul-2007

Recent studies show that the destructive potential and intensity of tropical storms and hurricanes have doubled over the past 35 years, and these trends are expected to continue because of global warming. The maps below show how increasing hurricane intensity can increase the risk of flooding in the Hilton Head Island area.

These maps are illustrative and are not intended to depict actual flooding from a specific storm, which will depend on landfall location and direction, storm speed, and other variables. Data are from the NOAA's Coastal Risk Atlas. Full sources and methodology
