Meet Becky Goldburg

Pioneer for Safer Seafood

Posted: 20-Jul-2006; Updated: 19-Jul-2006

Dr. Rebecca Goldburg - Becky as we affectionately call her - is a senior scientist at Environmental Defense. Her major projects involve researching and promoting fish that are healthy for the oceans and safe to eat. She also focuses on scientific and public policy issues concerning fish aquaculture.

Becky works in our New York office, but hails from Pittsburgh, PA. Her colleagues can always depend on her roll-up-the-sleeves, steely-eyed sensibility to nail down the science before promoting environmental policy solutions.

Having grown up loving nature and in a town known for its noxious air pollution, Becky has had ecology on her mind since she can remember.

She has traveled around the world to meet with salmon and shrimp farmers from Norway to Belize to Australia and back. She has earned the respect of, not only her environmental peers, but also many in the fishing industry as an unflappable expert dedicated to constructive engagement and meaningful win-win solutions.

Becky is a member of U.S. Department of Agriculture's working group to develop organic standards for aquaculture. She also serves on the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch Advisory Board and the Marine Aquaculture Task Force. She has authored numerous articles and appears regularly in the popular press.

She has an A.B. in Statistics from Princeton University as well as an M.S. in Statistics, a Ph.D. in Ecology, and an honorary Doctorate of Laws, all from the University of Minnesota.

But the best way to get to know Becky is through her work on sustainably produced and healthy seafood. Check out the Environmental Defense Eat Smart page to learn more.
