State-by State Health Benefits of Cost-Effectively Strengthening EPA's Proposed Pollution Reductions for Power Plants

Posted: 13-Aug-2004; Updated: 14-Oct-2005

EPA's proposed power plant reductions do not measure up to the pollution reduction investments required of other sectors. The map below illustrates the human health benefits that would result in each state if EPA strengthened its proposal.Overall, stronger power plant clean-up standards would prevent 16,000 premature deaths and one million asthma episodes in children annually.

Click on each of the 28 Eastern states highlighted in orange below to find out about the specific health benefits resulting from more protective EPA action. For each of the states below we show the incremental reductions for sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) beyond EPA's proposal, and the resulting incremental health benefits based on higher (but still cost-effective) thresholds of $1,500 and $2,000.  For total pollution reductions and health benefits for each state from finalizing a strengthened power plant standard, send an e-mail request to mshore@environmentaldefense.org.
